State Representative Roberts has gone “green”

She’s keeping vow to eliminate paper newsletters to her constituents

August 14, 2009

LYNNWOOD – Many wired constituents in Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mukilteo, Everett, and Mountlake Terrace will see a familiar name appear in their e-mail this week – Rep. Mary Helen Roberts (D-Lynnwood).

The Lynnwood Democrat told her constituents last year that she would no longer send traditional newsletters to the 21st Legislative District.

“In the interest of saving money, reducing waste, and exploring a whole new way of communicating with constituents, I decided to go completely paperless,” said Roberts. “I know I won’t reach as many people the first time out, but I’m hoping that those I miss will call my office and sign up for the next one.”

The electronic newsletter will also be available to all constituents on Roberts’ web page at www.housedemocrats.wa.gov/members/roberts.

E-mail addresses are run through the Secretary of State’s voter files. Legislative offices are reporting that more and more residents are requesting electronic communications only.

“A good number of people in our state are very concerned with the huge amount of paper that is used every day – a good amount of which ends up in our waste stream,” said Roberts. “I decided it was time to ‘walk the walk’ in terms of being environmentally-friendly.”
