2007 Committees
House Democratic Leadership: Deputy Majority Whip
Health Care and Wellness - Vice-Chair
The House Health Care and Wellness Committee considers a broad range
of issues relating to the provision of physical and mental health care
services and strategies to promote better health. Health care service
issues include the licensing and regulation of health care facilities
(such as hospitals, trauma care centers, and long-term care facilities)
and the credentialing of health care providers (such as doctors, nurses,
chiropractors, and mental health professionals). The committee also
regulates pharmacies and pharmaceutical drugs, and has oversight and
regulatory responsibility for state and local public health programs.
The committee also considers issues relating to the accessibility and
affordability of health care in both the private health insurance market
and public health programs such as medicaid and the basic health plan.
Appropriations
The House Appropriations Committee considers the operating budget
bill and bills with fiscal impact. In addition, the committee
specializes in pension policy.
Select Committee on Environmental Health
The Select Committee on Environmental Health considers issues
relating to environmental risks potentially affecting human health. Such
issues include environmental toxics (PBDE, lead, mercury, arsenic),
mold, air pollutants, solid and hazardous waste, contaminated sediments,
and food and drinking water safety. The committee also examines whether
disparities exist in the treatment of people and communities in the
development, implementation and enforcement of environmental laws, and
the siting of facilities affecting the environment.
Joint Committee on Veterans' & Military Affairs.
This important committee considers all aspects of legislation, policies and funding that impact Washington's
veterans, active duty military—including the Washington National Guard—and military families.
Dawn has served as Chair of this committee in previous years.
Because of her work on behalf of veterans and military families, Dawn was named the 2007 Legislator of the Year
by the Governor's Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee. She received the honor on Veterans Day, 2007.
Long Term Care Task Force, Chair
The Long Term Care Task Force develops recommendations to meet the long term care needs of Washington's citizens now and in the future.
Dawn sponsored the state law
that created this vital joint executive and legislative task force in 2005.

Member: State Council on Aging The State Council on Aging advises the Governor and state
agencies on policies. programs and services that have an impact on older people in Washington State.
