OLYMPIA—State Rep. Maralyn Chase, D-Shoreline, has been appointed to the Board of the Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County.
"I'm very pleased to be part of the decision-making about how we can best develop our area's workforce," Chase said after receiving news of the appointment. "Workforce development is the cornerstone of our economic recovery and long-term prosperity, and there is no question that the decisions we make in the next few years will impact our workers and businesses for generations.
The Workforce Development Council (WDC) of Seattle-King County is a private, nonprofit organization that oversees employment-related programs for youth, the adult workforce and employers in King County, with the goal of a strong economy and self-sufficiency for every resident.
The WDC board is comprised of economic development leaders from the private sector, labor groups, youth and adult education, and state and local government agencies.
Board Chair Rich Berkowitz hailed the Chase appointment.
"We're quite fortunate to have Maralyn Chase on the board," Berkowitz said. "It's rare for one person to have expertise in such a wide range of labor, economic development, education, trade, small business and green-jobs issues. With her passion and experience, she's going to be a tremendous asset in helping us to tap the full potential of our local workforce and economy in the years ahead."
In addition to other responsibilities, the WDC leads the WorkSource system in King County, which links its own employment and training efforts with those of the private sector, community organizations, colleges, labor groups and government. Shoreline Community College is a WorkSource Connection Site and provides access to WorkSource services.
"Shoreline Community College will have a crucial role in helping employers and workers of all ages to secure the skills they'll need to thrive in the emerging knowledge-based economy," Chase said. I've been proud to be a voice for Shoreline in the Legislature and look forward to being a strong voice for the college and our communities on the WDC Board."
