Public lands for outdoor recreation bill passes House

Blake bill examines ways to open more public lands

February 14, 2008

OLYMPIA – A bill to allow more access to state lands for fishermen, birdwatchers, hunters, hikers and other outdoor recreation enthusiasts cleared the House late last night.

"As a lifelong hunter and fisherman, I love the outdoors and I want others to enjoy it, too," said Rep. Brian Blake (D-Aberdeen), sponsor of the bill and chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, "I believe public lands should be open to the public for outdoor recreation."

House Bill 2472 would create a panel to study access to state lands, with representatives from outdoor recreation, industry and the state.

The panel will conduct public meetings, and report back to the Legislature by December 1, 2008 with solutions.

The bill specifically addresses public lands now blocked by surrounding private ownership. An example is 36,000 acres of public lands near the Toutle River which has very limited access.

"We have a wonderful resource in our forestlands and wetlands. I want to see us realize the full potential of those lands, for local folks who want to get outside and enjoy," said Blake.

The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
